The Role of Pharmacists in Addressing Systemic Racism

Due to recent murders of Black Americans and blaring disparities in the COVID-19 pandemic among underrepresented minorities, our society has been forced to face systems that perpetuate racial inequities. There is limited education on systemic racism in the pharmacy curriculum as well as continuing education for pharmacists. Currently, students associate disparities with race instead of racism. 2013 AACP white papers on cultural competency education discuss the inclusion of race/ethnicity but not racism. Recent literature suggests that there is a gap in knowledge on racism in healthcare among healthcare professionals such as pharmacists.

The overall need or education goal is to provide exploration of systemic racism through the discussion of forgotten and lost US history as it pertains to racism, enhance knowledge around racism related terms, uncover socializations learned from childhood to present and relate the social determinants of health back to historical happenings over hundreds of years. Participants should be able to confront racism and mitigate their biases due to this exploration journey. They should also be more informed on the social determinants of health and racism.
