Implicit Bias for Pharmacists

The Oath of a Pharmacist begins "I promise to devote myself to a lifetime of service to others through the profession of pharmacy....."  Pharmacists in general have the intention to to treat all their patrients with the best care possible, and to be impartial in how they provide these services.  The ultimate goal is to achieve the best possible outcomes.  It is clear that care is not provided uniformly to patients, perhaps due to individual perceptions, stereotypes and a pharmacist's subjective assessment of a patient.  Intentional (explicit) and unintentional (implicit) biases may play a part in our behavior.  This CPE activity will differentiate between explicit and implicit bias, but will concentrate on implicit beias.   It will examine in more detail the causes of implicit bias, potential effects of this bias on patients and the care that we provide, how we can recognize and and address our own biases both individually and at the organizational level.
