Pharmacy Technician Series: Cultural Competency with Transgender Patients

Barriers to healthcare for transgender individuals are a significant cause for distress in a patient population that already has a high rate of suicide and suicide attempts. A significant portion of medical interactions occur at the pharmacy where discrimination from staff can deter a transgender patient from seeking care – whether for medical transitioning or for comorbidities such as depression, anxiety/PTSD, HIV, or substance use disorder.

Disclosure Policy
The disclosure policies of the SIUE School of Pharmacy Office of Continuing Professional Education requires all persons in a position to control content to disclose any relevant financial relationships with commercial interests. If a conflict is identified, the Office of Professional Continuing Education will initiate a process for resolving the conflict.  The existence of relationships does not necessarily imply bias or lessen the value of the activity.  All educational materials are reviewed for fair balance, scientific objectivity of studies reported, and levels of evidence.
The persons required to disclose conflicts include all course faculty, the SIUE CPE administrator, all activity planners and all reviewers.  The relevant commercial financial relationships or affiliations must have occured over the past 12 months.

Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.  
The participant must provide the correct NABP ePID number/DOB combination in their electronic profile. All CPE evaluations must be completed within 60 days of completing the activity. It is the participant's responsibility to check that their credit records are correct within the 60 day period after completion of the activity.   Log in to CPE Monitor at to view a list of all ACPE-accredited activities you have taken. Any discrepancies must be resolved with the CPE Provider directly and in a timely manner.


Requirements for CE Credit

To receive CE credit, the participant must complete the entire course (be present for the entire live presentation, or complete the monograph or presentation in other formats, and complete the online pretest and post-test (as indicated for the activity) with a score greater than that specified for the course.   The participant must  also complete the online evaluation.  The evaluation must be completed within 60 days following the activity for live activities, and before the end dates for distance activities.  Evaluations  for activities not completed within the specified time will not be awarded credit.    

SIUE School of Pharmacy will transmit pharmacist activity completions to CPE Monitor within 30 days of completing all requirements.
